Biden’s Education Department Delays Defining Campus Antisemitism

(This article previously appeared in the Jewish Currents email newsletters; subscribe here!) As December 2022 approached, Palestinian-rights advocates grew nervous. That was the month by which the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) had promised to issue a new rule for assessing complaints of anti-Semitism, to comply with former President Donald Trump’s 2019 executive order on the subject. Advocates worried that in putting forward the rule, OCR might formally propose adopting the controversial International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism, which has been criticized for conflating censure of Israel with anti-Jewish bigotry. But December came and went…

The legal definition of adequate education collides with a broader definition of everything involved

May 5—As early as next month, a judge could decide what constitutes an adequate public school education in New Hampshire and what it costs to fund it. In Rockingham Superior Court on Friday, the lead attorney for the state and the Board of Education and the main litigator for the ConVal school district and roughly 16 other districts suing the state over its requirement to fund a constitutionally adequate education gave their closing arguments in a case that has simmered for years. The court’s ruling may boil down to the judge’s decision on whether adequate education follows the state Legislature’s…

Point Spread Definition, Examples

A point spread is a bet on the margin of victory in a sporting event. It’s the most popular bet type in basketball and football. The perceived stronger team (the favorite) must win by a certain number of points/runs/goals to cash your bet. The worse team (the underdog) can lose by fewer than that same amount of points, or just win the game. Let’s use a 2022 NFL Week 1 game as an example. The Ravens are a -7 favorite against the Jets. That makes New York a +7 underdog. Ravens win by 8+ points: Ravens bettors win Ravens win…

This story was originally posted on IdahoEdNews.org on Feb. 16, 2023. On Tuesday, Bessie Yeley of Nampa tested remotely, in opposition to the $45 million education savings accounts bill. She came to the Statehouse Wednesday, with her son, to testify in person. (Darren Svan/Idaho Education News) Even before the six hours of hearings, stretched across two afternoons, the vote was a done deal. It’s no surprise that the Senate Education Committee approved a controversial $45 million education savings accounts bill. Even before the hearings began Tuesday, five of the committee’s nine members had signed on as sponsors or co-sponsors. The…

Students Want a Better Education Experience. First, Teachers Must Master Deeper Learning.

At the beginning of this school year, I facilitated a professional development (PD) session with middle school teachers about how to use education technology tools for deeper learning. Jal Mehta and Sarah Fine, authors of the 2019 book “In Search of Deeper Learning”, define deeper learning as “the understanding of not just the surface features of a subject or discipline, but the underlying structures or ideas.” Even more than that, deeper learning invokes a kind of thinking and doing that transcends subjects and disciplines, going beyond understanding a concept and investigating deeper truths about ourselves, our communities and the world.…
