Education funding has been a highly debated topic in Saskatchewan, and one school division took the time to fact-check the province’s claims, addressing their repeated message of “record funding.” Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools (GSCS) sent a message to parents and caregivers saying they’ve been reviewing the provincial funding since it was announced in March. 1:50 Thousands rallied in Regina for increased education funding “Our initial optimism faded when faced with the reality that school divisions in Saskatchewan—and therefore the students and families we serve—would not benefit from the province’s good financial fortune,” read the letter. Complaints from parents, teachers prompted review of gender policy: NB education minister

Education Minister Bill Hogan said a review of Policy 713 was prompted by hundreds of complaints from across the province, some with concerns about the age-appropriateness of teaching students about gender identity. Speaking to reporters at the legislature Wednesday, Hogan revealed more details about what prompted his department to launch a review of the policy, in place since 2020, which details the protections that must be offered in schools to students who identify as LGBTQ+. He said he’s heard concerns from both parents and teachers that the policy crosses into the realm of sex-education curriculum, raising questions about how the…

McLean doubles down that education policies are sufficient

Sexual assault is a difficult topic, especially as evidenced in the legislature March 22 and the scrum afterward. Tough questions were posed about the lack of a policy within the department of Education for student-on-student harm by Kate White, the leader of the Yukon NDP. The NDP leader asked Education Minister Jeanie McLean how could it be possible that a young woman could have reported a sexual assault to the RCMP and the administration and still be forced to spend the next few years sharing the same space in school as her abuser? White had poured through the department’s policies…

Afghanistan: Online school helps deprived girls

It was unusual for Nargis Masoud’s mother to let her stay awake after 9 pm, otherwise the Grade 9 student might be late for school the next day. But on March 23 last year, Nargis stayed awake all night, crying. Nargis’s mother informed her earlier that day the Taliban had banned girls from attending school in Afghanistan beyond sixth grade. “I felt heartbroken, and I cried all night. It was like I wasn’t supposed to meet my classmates and teachers again.” Nargis told CTVNews.ca. Three million girls have been deprived of secondary education since the Taliban seized control of…
