Copyright exceptions in Canadian education aren’t a loophole, they’re essential

The shift towards digital access has changed the way libraries buy materials. (Shutterstock) Recent op-eds about Canadian copyright law call on the Canadian government to stop allowing uncompensated copying in education. At the end of May, an op-ed in The Globe and Mail described the current state of affairs regarding copyright and education as “the legalized robbery of Canadian authors by the education sector.” This follows the ongoing “I Value Canadian Stories” campaign, by a coalition of more than 20 publishing, writerly and creative associations, which calls on the federal government to “restore fair compensation to creators and publishers for…

On Thursday, Minister Dustin Duncan responded to questions about a leaked email from the Catholic school superintendent directing teachers not to take their students to an LGBTQ2S+ “Rainbow Tent” at the Nutrien Children’s Festival. “Certainly I do support the division’s decision on this, and certainly they have the autonomy to make that decision locally as all school divisions do,” said Duncan. Powers of anglophone school councils curtailed under proposed reforms

The Higgs government is reforming how district education councils govern the province’s schools, including a potentially thorny change that will see different models for the English and French systems. In the four anglophone school districts, elected councils will lose their decision-making authority over budgets and over superintendents, and will now only play an “advisory and accountability” role. In the three francophone districts, the councils will keep those powers. That’s because under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, minority-language communities in each province have the right to self-govern their own education systems. In the four anglophone school districts, elected councils will…

The founder/owner of the 2023 Canadian Dairy XPO knew a record was broken before official numbers were even released. That’s what owner Jordon Underhill told Stratford Today on the second day of the XPO. “It’s always good when you have exhibitors come to the office and tell you that it was a record day before you even know what the numbers are,” he said. The annual event takes over the Stratford Rotary Complex on Wednesday and Thursday, with exhibits, vendors, and educational resources available across the different halls of the Rotary Complex. The crowds are expected to exceed the previous…
